Game notes: It’s the Fourth of July, a day to celebrate America with fireworks (as the Tigers will after Game 2) and young exuberance, and so the Tigers will send rookie 26-year-olds Garrett Hill and Alex Faedo to the mound against the mighty lumber of Cleveland, which is averaging 4.36 runs a game this season. (OK, that’s just barely over the MLB average of 4.34 runs, but compared to the Tigers’ sparkler-like 3.00 runs a game, EVERYTHING is Roman Candles, if not M-80s.)

Monday’s first game will be the MLB debut for Hill, who will be the 14th different Tigers starting pitcher this season. The right-hander was the Tigers’ 26th-round pick in 2018 out of San Diego State, going at No. 765 overall. (Improbably, he’s the second 2018 26th-rounder to debut this year: Ethan Small, at No. 789, gave up two runs in 2 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks on May 30.)

Hill struck out 99 batters in 75⅔ innings in High- and Double-A last season, and continued his prowess this season in Double- and Triple-A: 98 strikeouts in 69⅔ innings. The 26-year old has had some control issues, however, with 15 walks and six HBPs with Erie (seven starts) and Toledo (eight starts) in 2022.

Still, Hill is confident in his abilities, or at least he was after starring in the Arizona Fall League last year. Hill was a strikeout machine for the Salt Lake Rafters in the AFL, as well, K’ing 21 with three walks and a 1.98 ERA over 13⅔ innings against some of the game’s top prospects.

“It gives me a pretty good idea of where I’m at, and that I can compete against these guys and get these higher-level hitters out,” Hill told the Free Press’ Evan Petzold in February. “Ultimately, it helps get me where I want to be, which is the big leagues. If I can get these guys out, I think I got a pretty good shot of being successful and getting guys in the big leagues out, too.”

In Game 2, the Tigers will run another rookie to the mound in right-hander Alex Faedo who might as well change his jersey from No. 49 to No. 27. He’s making his 11th start of the season — and his third as the “27th man” on the Tigers’ roster in the second game of a doubleheader. He allowed two runs over five innings in each of those, his first two career starts (against the Pirates and A’s), though the Tigers delivered just three runs combined.

Monday will also be Faedo’s third appearance against the Guardians; he allowed four runs on 11 hits and four walks with four strikeouts over 11⅓ innings combined on May 22 and May 28.

Two of those walks went to Tiger-killer Jose Ramirez, who has a career .327/.409/.629 slash line in 478 plate appearances against the franchise. But Ramirez is 0-for-4 in his other plate appearances against Faedo.

More good news for Faedo: One of the Guardians who hit him best, rookie outfielder Oscar Gonzalez (2-for-3 with a double), won’t be available Monday, as Cleveland placed him on the 10-day IL on Saturday. Faedo will still likely have to deal with slugger Josh Naylor, however. The 25-year-old took Faedo deep at Comerica Park back on May 22 and should be well-rested after sitting out Sunday’s win over the New York Yankees.

The Tigers and Guardians will wrap up their series with a 7:10 p.m. start Tuesday and a 1:10 p.m. “Getaway Day” start Wednesday. The Tigers will, indeed, get away to Chicago for a four-game series against the White Sox, while the Guardians will have a day off before visiting the Royals in K.C. for a three-game set.
