DES MOINES, IA – The Toledo Mud Hens and the Iowa Cubs split a doubleheader on Wednesday in Iowa. The Mud Hens took the first game 5-4, while the Cubs won game two 8-3.

*DES MOINES, IA – *The Toledo Mud Hens and the Iowa Cubs split a doubleheader on Wednesday in Iowa. The Mud Hens took the first game 5-4, while the Cubs won game two 8-3.

Game 1 – *The Mud Hens rode a three-run home run from *Jack Lopez to kick start the offense in game one. Lopez’s home run was his second in as many days. That put the Hens up 3-0 in the 2nd inning. Brendon Davis would tally an RBI single in the third to make it 4-0. John Valente hit his first home run of the season, making it a 5-0 game. The Mud Hens would survive Iowa’s rally, when they scored one run in the 5th inning and three in the sixth inning. Nick Vincent *picked up the win, he is now 3-5. *Miguel Del Pozo picked up his 5th save. Every single Mud Hens starter had at least one hit in game one.

The Mud Hens had 12 hits in game one, led by Jamie Westbrook, Davis and Valente, who each had two hits. Valente tallying a home run and an RBI, and Davis also tallied an RBI. Jack Lopez had the most productive first game of the one hit players, tallying a three-run home run with his lone hit. Ryan Kreidler and Josh Lester each doubled for their lone hits. Spencer Torkelson singled and scored, while Kerry Carpenter and Dustin Garneau each singled.

Elvin Rodriguez got the start in game one, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, including two home runs, four walks and four strikeouts. Vincent would follow Rodriguez, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and grabbing the win. Del Pozo would close it out, pitching 1.0 inning, allowing one hit and tallying the save.

*Game 2 – *The Mud Hens got on the board right away with a bases-loaded RBI infield single by Carpenter, to go up 1-0. Iowa scored one run in the 1st inning, and tacked on three more runs in the 2nd inning to go up 4-1. Lester would smash a two-run home run, his 16th of the season, making it 4-3 in the 3rd inning. Iowa would snag a run in the 5th and then add on three more in the 6th to put game two to bed, with the final score of 8-3. Three errors contributed to the game two loss.

Lester and Torkelson led the way offensively with two hits apiece. Lester homered and singled while scoring. Torkelson singled twice, walked and scored once. Carpenter tallied a single and an RBI. Westbrook picked up another single. Andre Lipcius also picked up a hit, being his first career hit at the Triple-A level.

Cody Sedlock toed the rubber for the Mud Hens in game two. Sedlock pitched 3.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, including three home runs, one walk and three strikeouts. Nolan Blackwood pitched 0.1 inning, allowing two hits and one walk. Sam Howard pitched 0.2 inning, retiring both batters he faced. Angel De Jesus pitched 1.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits, two walks and one strikeout. Logan Shore pitched the final 0.2 inning, allowing one hit.
