SUNDAY’S LOSS: Tigers lose in 10 innings despite pitching gem from Eduardo Rodriguez

Game notes: Thanks to the Brewers’ crossover to the National League in 1998, the Tigers haven’t gotten many chances to play in Milwaukee over the past two decades. Well, most of the Tigers. Today’s starting pitcher, Michael Lorenzen, can practically call American Family Field — or Miller Park, as it was called for so many years — a home away from home, thanks to his seven seasons (2015-21) pitching for NL Central rival Cincinnati Reds: His 18 appearances on the northwest side of Lake Michigan are his fourth-most at any park, behind only Cincy’s Great American Ball Park, Chicago’s Wrigley Field and Pittsburgh’s PNC Park. (Angel Stadium, his nominal home in Anaheim last season, only saw him nine times. Go figure.)

Then again, Miller Park/AFF has been something of a house of horrors for Lorenzen; in 18 innings (with one start), he has allowed 11 earned runs on 16 hits and 13 walks with 23 strikeouts, for a 5.50 ERA. To be fair, seven of those earned runs came in just two outings — Aug. 9, 2020, and Aug. 24, 2021 — in which he got just one out combined. Almost no hitters from those Brewers teams are still on the roster, save for former NL MVP Christian Yelich. Lorenzen shouldn’t worry about the 32-year-old too much, though; In 18 plate appearances vs. Lorenzen, Yelich has just two hits (both doubles), three walks, four strikeouts and a .545 OPS.

Lorenzen’s opponent on the mound, Freddy Peralta, has no such qualms about facing the Tigers; in his only start against Detroit, back on Sept. 14, 2021, the righty mowed down the Tigers over six innings, striking out nine and allowing just two hits and no walks. (He took a no-decision, however, as the Brewers matched the Tigers’ offensive futility for 10 innings; both teams went scoreless until the Tigers got a walk-off double from Derek Hill in the bottom of the 11th.)

With their series wrapped up in Milwaukee, the Tigers will zip home to open a four-game set against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night at Comerica Park. After the O’s swept the Tigers in Baltimore to drop them to 1-11 against AL East foes, even one win would be a success. The Brewers, meanwhile, get Thursday off before finishing April with a three-game set against the Angels at home.
