THURSDAY’S VICTORY: Two home runs from Spencer Torkelson carry Detroit Tigers to 8-5 win over Texas Rangers

Game notes: Neither team had announced a starter for Game 2 of the series as of the end of Friday’s Game 1. For the Tigers, we know that means yet another “bullpen” game, featuring an opener and a rapid succession of pitchers. It’s likely to be the Tigers’ 14th game this season (in 82 on the year) with a start lasting three innings or fewer. Only three teams have more such starts this season: The Tampa Bay Rays (20), the San Francisco Giants (19) … and the Rockies, with 15.

Of course, the Rockies, eternally tortured by the vastness of Coors Field and the high altitude in the Rocky Mountains, haven’t had that many short starts by design: Of those 15, 11 have featured a starter giving up at least four runs, which goes a long ways toward explaining why Colorado is 2-13 when its starter pitches three innings or less. The Tigers, meanwhile, are 6-7 in short starts.

After tonight’s game, the squads wrap up the series with a 3:10 p.m. start on Sunday. The Tigers will then get Monday off before starting a three-game set against the MLB-worst Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night, while the Rockies have a quick two-game set against the Astros in Houston beginning Tuesday.
