Detroit Tigers vs. Los Angeles Angels postponed due to weather; doubleheader Thursday

Detroit Free Press

Another day of Shohei Ohtani will have to wait.

The Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels postponed Wednesday’s game, scheduled for 6:40 p.m., due to the forecast of severe inclement weather at Comerica Park in Detroit. The Tigers lost, 7-6, in Tuesday’s series opener.

There will be a straight doubleheader Thursday for the final two games of the three-game series. The first game of the straight doubleheader will begin at 1:10 p.m., with the second game scheduled for 40 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

TRADE DEADLINE: Tigers have obvious trade candidates, but who else could be moved?

Before the postponement, the Tigers were scheduled to start right-hander Michael Lorenzen (against left-hander Patrick Sandoval) in the second game of the series and right-hander Matt Manning (against right-hander Chase Silseth) in the series finale.

The Angels switched their starters for the doubleheader, with Ohtani starting Game 1 and Sandoval starting Game 2. Ohtani, who was originally scheduled to pitch Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays, is expected to hit in both games of Thursday’s doubleheader.

For the Tigers, Lorenzen will start Game 1 and Manning will start Game 2.

Ohtani has a 3.71 ERA with 47 walks and 148 strikeouts over 111⅔ innings in 19 starts as a pitcher, along with a .299 batting average, 36 home runs, 62 walks and 104 strikeouts in 99 games as a hitter.

The Tigers lost Tuesday’s game in extra innings after making a four-run comeback in the ninth inning. Ohtani, the two-way superstar, finished 0-for-2 with two walks and two strikeouts in his first matchup against the Tigers in 2023.

Riley Greene, the Tigers’ best player, went 3-for-5 with a clutch RBI double in the ninth inning.
