Game notes: The Tigers will have lefty Tarik Skubal on the mound for the second game of their four-game set with the Yanks.
Skubal has been inconsistent since returning July 4 from flexor tendon surgery, at times looking dominant and then falling apart at others. Skubal gave up six hits and four earned runs to the Chicago Cubs in his last time out, a game the Tigers lost after fighting back with a Kerry Carpenter grand slam before surrendering a few more runs later. The game prior, Skubal gave up just three hits and one run as the Tigers took down the Cleveland Guardians.
Skubal has all the talent in the world and is more than capable of dominating batters, which he usually does even in his poor performances, but needs to develop more consistency and give up less big innings. The Tigers will hope Skubal can use the final month or so of the season to straighten out that issue and help contribute to what should be a strong rotation in 2024 with Casey Mize gearing up for a comeback.
Meanwhile, the Tigers are expected to face Michael King, who has primarily served in a bullpen with the exception of a few games recently when he’s served as the “opener.”
King’s season high for innings-pitched is just 3⅔ and he’s only thrown three innings twice this year, so don’t expect to see King go too deep into the Tigers lineup.
