Game notes: Matt Manning makes his first start, with an extra day off, since holding the potent Houston Astros offense to one hit over 6⅓ innings on Friday. He left that start unexpectedly, however, as back pain cut his outing short at 80 pitches. Manning relied heavily on his four-seam fastball (43.8% of his 80 pitches) and slider (40%) while staying within the strike zone against the ‘Stros, getting five called strikes and five whiffs on the four-seamer and seven called strikes and two whiffs on the slider. He didn’t pile up many strikeouts — just three — but also didn’t issue a walk, a skill that will be key against the bigger bats (like, say, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton) in the Yankees lineup. He’ll have the small advantage of surprise, as this will be his first start against the Yankees in three seasons.

Clarke Schmidt has two career appearances vs. the Tigers, both in relief last season, with a 2.08 ERA against the Old English “D.” Still, he has only faced four current Tigers, with Javier Báez owning two hits (both singles) in three at-bats and Akil Baddoo, Miguel Cabrera and Spencer Torkelson combining to go 1-for-6 in their careers vs. Schmidt. The righty has an unsightly 5.04 ERA this month, but that was elevated by a disastrous outing in which he allowed eight runs in 2⅓ innings to the MLB-leading Atlanta Braves on Aug. 14. In his four other starts, he has allowed six earned runs over 27⅔ innings, for an ERA of 1.95.

After today’s finale, the Tigers and Yankees go their separate ways for all of three games, with the Tigers heading to Chicago to face the woeful White Sox while the Yanks open September in Houston vs. the Astros. The two squads will reunite Tuesday in New York, however, for a three-game set in the Bronx. Perhaps Gleyber Torres — 6-for-10 with a homer in each of the first three games of this series — will have cooled off by then. The Tigers can only hope.
