Mize spins gem in 5th straight quality start

Detroit Tigers

For most of Sunday afternoon, the only heartbreak for the Tigers seemed to be a no-hit bid for Casey Mize. Instead, it was the first blemish on new closer Michael Fulmer, who gave up a walk-off two-run homer to Carlos Santana for a 3-2 loss to the Royals on Sunday at Kauffman Stadium.

Mize had no-hit stuff for six innings, working through the Royals’ lineup unscathed through three innings and striking out four of his first seven batters. The only argument was whether he had allowed a hit on Salvador Perez’s high-hop bouncer that skipped off shortstop Niko Goodrum’s glove and into left field for what was scored a two-out single in the fourth. The official scorer looked at the replay, according to Tigers radio broadcaster Dan Dickerson, but upheld his call of a single rather than an error.
