Injuries & Roster Moves: Ramos back to IL

Detroit Tigers

MLB.com is keeping track of the Tigers’ recent transactions and any injury updates that occur this season. Check back here for answers to questions on the roster or a player’s injury status.

May 24: C Wilson Ramos placed on 10-day IL (lumbar spine strain)
Ramos had a 10-day stint on the IL for his previous back injury before returning May 17. He caught only one game and served as Detroit’s designated hitter for five others, but his struggles – he went 2-for-23 with no extra-base hits and six strikeouts – indicated something was off and he was sidelined again.

May 24: OF Victor Reyes selected from Triple-A Toledo; OF JaCoby Jones optioned to Toledo
The 29-year-old Jones has been a regular member of the Tigers roster since 2018, but hasn’t been able to build on an encouraging but injury-shortened 2020 season. He’s batting .170 (17-for-100) with two homers, nine RBIs, five walks and 42 strikeouts. Reyes had similar struggles before he was optioned to Toledo two weeks ago and hit .391 (18-for-46) in 12 games for the Mud Hens.

C Wilson Ramos (10-day IL, lumbar spine strain)
Expected return: TBD
Ramos will go through a full rehab process before he’s cleared to return, manager A.J. Hinch said. He’ll likely have a longer absence than the 10 days he missed earlier this month with the same injury. (Last updated: May 25)

C Grayson Greiner (10-day IL, left hamstring strain)
Expected return: End of May
Greiner will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday. The recent success of Eric Haase and Jake Rogers in Detroit has allowed the Tigers to be patient. (Last updated: May 25)

RHP Erasmo Ramirez (10-day IL, right pectoralis strain)
Expected return: TBD
Ramirez didn’t make an appearance for the Tigers before going on the IL. He was warming up for what would’ve been his Tigers debut on May 7 when he had to stop due to the injury. (Last updated: May 25)

RHP Julio Teheran (60-day IL, right shoulder strain)
Expected return: TBD
Teheran, who made the Tigers’ Opening Day roster following a dominant Spring Training as a non-roster invite, made one start for Detroit on April 3 before reporting shoulder issues. The Tigers placed him on the 60-day injured list almost immediately, indicating he wouldn’t be back pitching anytime soon. Though he has avoided needing surgery, he’s expected to face an extensive rehab process. (Last updated: May 25)
